University of Pennsylvania Provost John L. Jackson, Jr. has announced the appointment of Jules van Binsbergen, the Nippon Life Professor in Finance at the Wharton School, as the Lauder Professor and Anthony L. Davis Director of the Joseph H. Lauder Institute for Management and International Studies, beginning July 1, 2024.

“Jules van Binsbergen is one of the most exciting and inventive scholars transforming our understanding of global finance,” said Provost Jackson. “He is an award-winning teacher and researcher whose work embodies the goals of the Lauder Institute to look globally, engage locally, and act responsibly. This mission is more essential than ever as we implement our new campus-wide strategic framework, In Principle and Practice, which urges us to lead on the great challenges of our time with interdisciplinary insights and engaged collaborations.”

Prof. van Binsbergen is a global expert in corporate finance whose pathbreaking theoretical and empirical research focuses on issues related to investments, institutional investors, and asset pricing. His award-winning research – in such leading journals as the American Economic Review, the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics and the Journal of Monetary Economics – examines such critical topics as the relationships between financial markets and the macro economy, the effects of monetary policy on asset prices, the development of machine learning models for earnings forecasts, and the benchmarks to measure the skills and performance of mutual fund asset managers.

A research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, a research fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research, and a former editor of the Review of Finance, he has won multiple teaching awards and was named to the well-known Poets and Quants ranking of the best “40 Under 40” business school professors. He currently co-hosts the award-winning podcast All Else Equal: Making Better Decisions, which explores the science and strategy of making better decisions in conversations with prominent global business leaders. Born in the Netherlands, he came to Penn in 2014 and previously taught at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He received a PhD in Finance from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University and an MA in Financial Econometrics from Tilburg University, following undergraduate studies in jazz piano at the Royal Conservatory in the Hague.

“As we celebrate the Institute’s 40th anniversary, my family and I are delighted to welcome Jules van Binsbergen to the Lauder community as the Institute’s next Director,” said Ronald S. Lauder, Chair of the Lauder Institute Board of Governors. “Jules is uniquely qualified to lead the Institute to the next level of excellence for what is, without a doubt, the preeminent program for international business education and leadership. We look forward to our collaboration with Jules and the entire Lauder team, as well as the University, to promote even greater innovation in the coming years.”■
