On October 16, 2014, the Lauder Institute hosted a conference called “The New Global South? Business, Politics, and Culture in a Changing South-South Environment” to generate new knowledge and analysis on problems and opportunities inherent to the Southern Hemisphere. This issue has gained particular relevance in recent years given the growth i n African economies and increasing investment in its markets, governments, and societies from emerging market powers like China, India, Brazil, and South Africa. The conference brought in leaders from academia, business, government, multilateral organizations, and nonprofits who analyzed the challenges posed under “The New Global South” and proposed solutions in the form of focused panels. This day generated a lively discussion around new modes of investment and their impact in Africa. The NGS Conference is funded in part through a grant from the Global Engagement Fund of Penn Global.
The conference focused on such issues as:
- Empowering women and girls;
- Food, water, and security;
- Investment on the continent from emerging market powers – e.g. China, India, Brazil, South Africa;
- The role of the state.
