JD/MA Admissions - Class of 2017

Applications to the Lauder program are welcomed at the time of the Law School application or during the fall of 1L. Application materials include the Lauder Supplement, an up-to-date resume, one Lauder essay, the Oral Proficiency Interview(s), and a copy of your Penn Law application. Details can be found below and in the Lauder application/supplement.

  1. Lauder Supplement for JD applicants: This form serves as the application and confirms the candidate's proposed academic program of concentration within Lauder. Information about language proficiency and international/cross-cultural experience is also provided on this form. Please also include an up-to-date resume.

  2. Lauder Essays: All applicants to the Lauder program are required to complete one Lauder essay:

Please explain why you are currently applying to Lauder. How do you expect the Lauder joint-degree experience to benefit you on both a professional and personal level? (1,000 words)

  3. Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI): An OPI is required of all Lauder applicants and must be arranged, scheduled, and completed with Language Testing International (LTI). The OPI, which assesses oral proficiency, is a 20-30 minute telephone conversation in the target language with a tester certified by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). To schedule an OPI, complete and submit LTI's online application. When scheduling your OPI, please be sure to register as a Lauder applicant with LTI. The OPI may be completed any time after August 1, 2014 to count for the current admissions cycle, but it must be completed within two weeks after submitting your Lauder Application.

Please review Lauder's language requirements to learn more and listen to sample OPI audio clips.

For applicants to one of Lauder’s nine language programs:  An OPI in the proposed non-native language of study is required. The ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines for the OPIrange from Novice to Distinguished, and an Advanced rating is the expected level for admission to Lauder's Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish program.

Note about Portuguese: Native level Spanish, French, or Italian speakers will be considered for the Portuguese language program without prior knowledge of Portuguese. These applicants should test in their native level language (Spanish, French, or Italian), and in these cases a Superior rating is expected for admission. Native level Spanish, French, or Italian speakers who speak some Portuguese should test in Portuguese even if they expect their rating to be below Advanced.

For applicants to Lauder’s Global Program: Two OPIs in languages other than English are required of all applicants to the Global Program. The ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines for the OPI range from Novice to Distinguished, and applicants are expected to show strong proficiency in both OPI languages by receiving at least one Superior and a second score in the Advanced to Superior range. Applicants may test in their native language provided it is not English.

  4. Copy of Penn Law application: The complete application, with transcripts and LSAT scores, but without recommendations, should be sent directly from Penn Law. If applying during 1L, a copy of your first-semester grades should also be sent once they become available. Review the instructions in the supplement/application for specifics.

  5. Interview: Lauder interviews are granted by invitation only, based upon a full review of your application. The interview will focus on your international/cross-cultural interests and experience, personal qualities, general fit for Lauder, and ability to start and manage the two programs beginning in early May. Applicants selected to interview will receive communication with details on how to arrange their interview.
