University of Pennsylvania Provost John L. Jackson, Jr. has announced that Martine R. Haas, the Lauder Professor and Anthony L. Davis Director of the Lauder Institute, will step down from her role as Director after a successful five-year term. As of June 30th, 2024, Martine will return to her full-time faculty position in Wharton’s Department of Management.

Early in her tenure as Lauder Director, Martine articulated a clear and compelling vision for the Lauder Institute: to develop outstanding business leaders who look globally, engage locally, and act responsibly to have a powerful impact on our world. This mission-focused approach proved to be foundational as Martine led the Lauder Institute through some of the most challenging periods of its history. Six months into her tenure, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, with major implications for the Institute’s extensive international immersion programming and on-campus activities. Around the same time, the Institute sought to address important social justice issues with courage and compassion. Martine focused on the distinctive international aspects of the Lauder program and community to champion innovative curricular and co-curricular programming designed to prepare Lauder students for global and intercultural challenges.

Under her thoughtful, dedicated, and strategic leadership, the Institute has remained focused on amplifying the impact and prominence of the Lauder program by strengthening its institutional capacity to support and grow new initiatives. Martine’s commitment to ensuring financial aid, strong academic programming, internship support, and mentorship opportunities with the Lauder Senior Global Fellows has enhanced the student experience and ensured the Institute’s long-term success. We are deeply grateful for her impactful leadership and contributions.

The Office of the Provost will convene a search process to identify Martine’s successor, working closely with the Lauder Institute’s partner Schools, the Board of Governors, and members of the Lauder community.■
