JD/MA Program

The Lauder Institute offers a JD/MA program that’s geared to prepare you for the world of global business. It’s for those who speak a second language and want to learn the art of communicating and conducting business in that language, for those with a passion for understanding cultural diversity and interests that go beyond business. It’s is more than a business program. It’s a career-changing, life-changing opportunity.

The unique joint-degree JD/MA Lauder Program prepares future leaders by integrating the Penn Law JD with an MA in International Studies from Penn’s School of Arts & Sciences. Students become part of a small, tight-knit community passionate about international management issues and global studies.

Students in this program will be prepared to assume positions of leadership in international law, business, and policy-making in the various sectors.

The MA in International Studies is designed for students who already have advanced second-language skills and emphasizes cross-cultural training through one of nine programs or the new Global Program. The nine languages available for study are Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish.

Another differentiating aspect of the International Studies curriculum is that students work in teams on a research project that enables them to integrate their learning across disciplinary, linguistic, and regional boundaries.

The 24-month, joint-degree calendar begins in early May and includes a summer of study, comprising 4 weeks on campus followed by an 8-week summer immersion program abroad prior to starting the second year at Penn Law.

JD/MA students join the Lauder Institute at the conclusion of their first year of Law School. All coursework can be completed during the remaining two years of Law School.
