Founded in 1983 by Leonard A. Lauder and Ronald S. Lauder in memory of their father, Joseph H. Lauder, the Lauder Institute is more than a business program. It’s a career changing, life-changing opportunity.

Preparing leaders to speak the global language of business, culture, and politics. Fluently.

“The program of the Institute is not an academic or intellectual luxury, but rather a business necessity and a national imperative. There truly is a global economy, and we handle the problems and opportunities that international business has created. One good place to start is in our universities, the training arena for tomorrow’s managers.”

-Leonard A. Lauder, Chairman, The Estée Lauder Companies

20 years ago, the program was initiated in response to the difficulty that the Lauders had in finding qualified executives who had the necessary skills to do business in foreign cultures, as well as conduct negotiations in languages other than English. Dr. Richard Herring, Wharton Professor and Director of the Lauder Institute, agrees that “too many MBAs were narrowly trained, had poor language skills, and were awkward with cultural differences”. The Lauder Institute offers a program that prepares leaders for the world of global business.

Currently, the Lauder Institute offers 8 different language programs: Arabic (added in 2002), Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
