CIBER Ph.D. ResearchEach year Penn Lauder CIBER awards funding to Wharton doctoral candidates. Most of these doctoral candidates use the funding to attend and present at international conferences or domestic conferences with significant attendance by international faculty. The goal of this funding is to encourage doctoral candidates -- future faculty at business schools across the nation -- to add an international dimension or perspective to their dissertation topics. Grant recipients use the funds to pursue a diverse range of studies -- from examining the role of international NGOs in post-conflict reconstruction to longitudinal studies of high-tech firms in China, for example. Ph.D. candidates interested in applying for funding should submit to the CIBER coordinator a three-to-five-page outline of their projects, including a proposed budget (awards average $2,000). The annual deadline for summer funding is usually in March, although the committee occasionally makes exceptions on a case-by-case basis. With the goal of strengthening the pipeline of international business research, these three-day conferences help students think about ways to add an international component to their research. By connecting Ph.D. students with faculty working on leading-edge research in international business and introducing Ph.D. students to a network of peers with similar research foci, the consortium helps to train tomorrow's business leaders and researchers to think more globally. In the summer of 2006, Penn Lauder CIBER will host the International Accounting Doctoral Consortium, which will be open to all business doctoral candidates with a research interest in accounting. The cost of this event will be heavily subsidized by Penn Lauder CIBER and its co-sponsors; a nominal fee will cover all programs, food, and lodging for the duration of the consortium. Recent consortia have included:
