Area Studies for Business

Penn Lauder CIBER has recently completed the first phase of a new project, Area Studies for Business, in collaboration with Michael Halperin, Director of the Wharton School's Lippincott Library. This project has produced a database of non-traditional literature and documents in area studies that have a business orientation relating to a particular geographic region. All of the research and collection of materials for this tool were conducted at Penn.

To make this database available to a broad audience, Lippincott Library is working with EBSCO Information Services to catalog these documents. EBSCO will abstract and index the citations and provide links to the full text sites. The abstracts will become part of EBSCO's database, Business Source Premier.

The next phase in this project is to develop a research discovery tool, in the form of FAQ, to reference documents in the area/international studies database -- most likely as part of the general business FAQ research tool that Penn's Lippincott Library has already developed. Use of this research tool is currently being piloted by Columbia Business School's Library and will eventually be available to the general public.
